Groundwater contaminant transport modeling using MODFLOW and MT3DMS: a case study in Rajshahi City

Abstract Rapidly growing urbanization and industrialization processes including man-made activities result in groundwater contamination that becomes unsafe for human use. In this study, the flow contaminant migration through aquifers Rajshahi City were modeled using MODFLOW MT3DMS codes. ModelMuse, a graphical user interface (GUI), is used to run codes hydrological geological data of region are as input parameters model. The travel distance five selected contaminants such chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), from source (e.g. landfill site), simulated corresponding times 1, 3, 5, 10, 15, 20, 50 years. study results showed increases over time follows logarithmic trend. Among contaminants, model-predicted show concentration Cr Pb varies more than 90% their standards period years, which suggests these two pollutants prime polluting coming future. This model can be an effective decision-making tool monitoring transport specific location.
